First Time Boat Owners

If it is your first time as a boat owner, this is a very exciting time for you. Here are some tips that can
help keep you safe, eliminate hassles and up your fun factor…
Before you even make your purchase, you need to check your maximum tow rating because you don’t
want to buy a boat just to find out later that your truck can’t tow it. You also need to look into insurance
in case of any unfortunate occurrences, such as an accident while towing, a fuel spill, etc. Plus, towing
can cost a small fortune, so you’ll want to check for a towing endorsement. Then research your storage
options and put a plan in place for that as well. Just an aside…if you happen to purchase your boat at
Gerry’s Marina in New Smyrna Beach, you automatically get the first three months of storage and Sea
Tow coverage for free.
You also want to focus on safety. Always make certain someone knows where you are headed and when
you plan to return, fill up with fuel, check the weather before you head out and keep a radio on board
for weather updates. Stock your vessel with all the safety gear required by the U.S. Coast Guard
including a personal floatation device for each person on board, a floatation device you can throw, the
proper distress signals, fire extinguishers and an anchor with line. You should also have a first-aid kit and
flashlight with fresh batteries on board, as well as basic tools and spares such as extra lines, fuel filters
and through-hull plugs, etc.
There are some things you need to learn as well, like how to tow, fuel, launch and dock your boat. You
should also know and adhere to the rules of the “road” (water), as well as proper basic maintenance,
such as oil and fuel filter changes, proper lubrication and regular inspection of props and lines.
Then, go through your pre-departure checklist to make sure you have everything you need before you
take off, operate your boat responsibly and go have some fun out there!
