Dip your toes in the water and park your butt in the sand…’cause here comes a very cool, one-of-a-kind piece of land! During low tide every day, as the water recedes, an island appears between the area where Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach nearly meet. That island was dubbed Disappearing Island; and it is where the magic happens!
Although Disappearing Island is only accessible by boat, it is certainly easily accessible. You will find it across from the Coast Guard station, offering a beautiful view of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. Just launch from the North Causeway boat ramp in New Smyrna Beach or the Port Orange Causeway Park boat ramp and set a leisurely course along the scenic, minimum wake waterway. Don’t forget to gaze longingly at all the gorgeous homes on your way!
The canal on Disappearing Island’s west side, where larger boats typically park, is protected from the waves; and the east side, where the waves roll up, offers the perfect place to beach smaller boats.
Boaters of all types and from all around convene in this incredibly unique place, and that is when the fun ensues! There are often rousing games of horseshoes, corn hole and volleyball, as well as music playing and kids and dogs frolicking along the beach. Bring your chairs, grills and coolers, because you will want to stay for a bit!
And then, my friends, this fleeting island hot spot will go away to come away another day. Disappearing Island in Ponce Inlet is a truly unique boating experience that – if you haven’t tried – you won’t want to miss!
